{"id":16601,"date":"2025-09-16T09:02:51","date_gmt":"2025-09-16T06:02:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uomisan.edu.iq\/eng\/ar\/?p=16601"},"modified":"2025-09-16T09:50:10","modified_gmt":"2025-09-16T06:50:10","slug":"a-lecturer-from-the-college-of-engineering-participates-in-the-membership-of-the-masters-thesis-discussion-committee-at-al-mustansiriya-university","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uomisan.edu.iq\/eng\/ar\/en\/blog\/archives\/16601","title":{"rendered":"A lecturer from the faculty of Engineering participates in the membership of the Master&#8217;s thesis discussion committee at Al-Mustansiriya University"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Assistant Professor Firas Jawad Kazem, a lecturer at the faculty of engineering \u2013 University of Maysan, participated as a member of the committee discussing the master\u2019s thesis of the student <strong>Sondos Karim Mutasher<\/strong> on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, at the faculty of engineering \u2013 Al-Mustansiriya University \/ Department of Civil Engineering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The thesis was entitled <em>\u201cImproving the geometric properties of swollen soils by adding polymers\u201d<\/em>, and aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of biopolymers in improving the engineering properties of swollen soils. Four different types of biopolymers were used, including a natural polymer \u2013 a gel extracted manually from cotton seeds \u2013 in addition to three synthetic polymers purchased from the local market: pectin, carboxymethyl cellulose, and guar gum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">These additives were introduced into the swelling soil at different dry weight ratios, and a series of laboratory tests were conducted on both treated and untreated samples. The tests included the standard Proctor test, Atterberg limits, one-dimensional compression, unconfined compression resistance, infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray analysis, swelling test, and wetting and drying cycles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The results indicated a clear improvement in soil properties with all biopolymers. The maximum dry density decreased, while the optimum moisture content increased with higher proportions of polymeric additives. Atterberg limits also showed different changes depending on the polymer type: cotton gel and pectin caused a slight decrease, while guar gum and carboxymethyl cellulose resulted in an increase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Swelling potential and swelling pressure significantly decreased, while unconfined compressive strength improved with all types of biopolymers. The study demonstrated that the addition of cotton gel, pectin, carboxymethyl cellulose, and guar gum effectively enhances the engineering properties of swollen soils, each showing distinct performance characteristics and confirming their potential as sustainable and environmentally friendly soil improvement solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The discussion committee included Medhat Shaker Medhat (Chairman), Muhammad Hussein Kazem (Member), Firas Jawad Kazem (Member), and<strong> Shaima Hassan Fadel <\/strong>(Member and Supervisor).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">After listening to the student\u2019s defense and reviewing the advanced results and experiments, the committee decided to accept the thesis and grant it an excellent rating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p dir=\"ltr\">This participation reflects the active role of faculty of engineering lecturers at the University of Maysan in promoting academic openness and strengthening scientific cooperation with Iraqi universities, thereby contributing to the exchange of expertise and the consolidation of the research process in Iraq.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"940\" height=\"788\" src=\"https:\/\/uomisan.edu.iq\/eng\/ar\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/image-7.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16602\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uomisan.edu.iq\/eng\/ar\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/image-7.png 940w, https:\/\/uomisan.edu.iq\/eng\/ar\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/image-7-300x251.png 300w, https:\/\/uomisan.edu.iq\/eng\/ar\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/image-7-768x644.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 940px) 100vw, 940px\" \/><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Assistant Professor Firas Jawad Kazem, a lecturer at the faculty of engineering \u2013 University of Maysan, participated as a member of the committee discussing the master\u2019s thesis of the student Sondos Karim Mutasher on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, at the faculty of engineering \u2013 Al-Mustansiriya University \/ Department of Civil Engineering.
