The policy and duties of the department are\nthe responsibility of the Department Council, which delegate&#8217;s part of its\nauthorities to the head of the department. A number of Scientific and\nAdministrative Committees , established by the college, &nbsp;are assigned the responsibility of specific\nareas of interest to the department. Teaching and research tasks are discussed\nand approved by the Department Council which also endorses the achievements of\nfaculty. The Department Council endorses students&#8217; performance and examination\nresults before they are submitted to the college administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Principles of Pathology<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pathology is the study of disease.\nIt is central to the whole practice of evidence- based medicine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The course is an introduction to the\nstudy of disease, including pathology and dynamics of disease states. Disorders\nof the form and tissues are reviewed and their relationships to clinical\nmanifestations are emphasized. Initial considerations concern general\npathology, including such topics as cell damage, cell death, circulatory\ndisorders, inflammatory conditions, genetic disease, neoplasia, infection and\nimmunity, environmental pathology, etc. Attention thereafter is directed toward\nthese factors as they apply in the different organ systems. Concepts integral\nto laboratory medicine are included throughout the course, with special\nemphasis on clinical pathology. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The course includes four hours of\nlecture and four hours of class inclusive sessions per week. The discussion\ngroup presents an opportunity to review microscopic slides, and case-oriented\nmaterial, with emphasis on pathology. The lecture and discussion subject matter\nis coordinately scheduled to coincide with subjects being presented in other\nyear or departments courses, including Microbiology, Pharmacology, and\nIntroduction to Clinical Practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Departmental Mission Statement <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The mission of the Department of\nPathology within the broad missions of the Misan Medical College is to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; Prepare third year medical\nstudents for their clinical years. The students learn about human diseases so that\nthey may develop facility in the diagnosis of their patients&#8217; medical problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>-Provide an excellent clinical and\nlaboratory services to the clinicians and patients we serve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211; Participate in and contribute to\nbasic, applied and clinical research activities interdepartmentally and\nextramurally in the field of pathology. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;Teaching is a significant part of the\nDepartment of Pathology&#8217;s mission. The scope of our curricula includes teaching\nand training of medical students, as well as to develop continuing Medical\nEducation programs in pathology as needed by the Misan Medical College.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Our Vision <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our vision is to become a preeminent\nDepartment in the Misan Medical College, which is recognized for excellence in\nthe education of students, and the innovative application of science and\ntechnology to the diagnosis and management of human disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Department of Pathology supports\nthe goals and common vision of the Misan Medical College. We foster organizational growth, innovation, and\nproductivity by supporting personal development, empowerment, and a spirit of\ncooperation among our members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211;<strong>Objective:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;\nThe main objective of practical classes is to support the theory and to\nhelp the students to learn the basic practical principles in pathology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Practical classes include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>Microscopic slides:&nbsp;\n2 hrs. per week: Teach the student the microscopy.<\/li><li>Pathological specimens with discussion: 1 hr. per\nweek: Teach the student how to take specimens for histopathological\nexamination, the ways of preservation, fixation&nbsp;&nbsp; and the histopathological techniques.\nExamine of available pathological specimens.<\/li><li>Tutorials:&nbsp; One\nhour per week: The aims:&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&#8211; Give the students the opportunity to ask\nfurther information.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&#8211; Give the opportunity to the teachers to\nassess the standard of their methods of teaching.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Annual assessment: Theory 70%; Practical 30%<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;-First Term: 10%<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;-Midyear: 20%<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;-Second term: 10%<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;-Final: 60%<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;\nLaboratories<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under the umbrella of the Department\nof Pathology, there two laboratories:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li><strong>Laboratory of Histopathology: <\/strong><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The mandates of this laboratory are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>&nbsp;Teaching practical sessions on General and\nSystemic Pathology for&nbsp; the 3<sup>rd<\/sup>\nyear students, Medical College of Misan.<\/li><li>Conduction\nof researches on human Pathology.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Laboratory of Molecular Pathology:<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>A nucleus for this laboratory was\nestablished in 2014 when two PCR (Conventional and Real time) were provided.\nTemporary space was allocated for this laboratory which is expected to move soon\nto a more suitable place a space-wise.
