Community medicine department

 Vision
 The Department of Family and Community Medicine will play a central role in optimizing health for and with communities, families, and individual.
 Mission
 The mission of the Department of Family and Community Medicine is to prepare medical students for family-oriented health care delivery system and to give students an understanding of the family and community as the basic units of society.
Our mission is to prepare family physicians to provide quality care for urban underserved communities.
To accomplish this, we strive to:
• Offer residents a high-quality, comprehensive primary care education that emphasizes the social, economic, and cultural dimensions of health and illness;
• Promote collaborative, family-centered health care which supports and relies on our patients’ autonomy, strengths, and values; and
• Attract residents, faculty, and staff of diverse cultural backgrounds and life experiences and inspire them to work toward broader social change.

The departmental medical education programs will be nationally recognized for excellence in teaching the principles of family medicine through innovative curricula that promote critical thinking and lifelong learning skills.

The research program will engage in high quality primary care research that improves the health of the community and eliminates disparities in health care.
• Clinical:
The department of FCM will meet the needs of the community through the provision of high quality clinical services incorporating innovative models of health care delivery that are evidence based and culturally sensitive.

We are committed to active engagement in the community, addressing their needs, and advocating on their behalf.

Course objective:
The course is designed to enable the student to:

1. Define statistics and list the main uses of statistics in medicine.

2. List methods of data presentation and demonstrate the ability to present raw data in meaningful form.

3. State the purpose of a frequency distribution and cumulative frequency distribution in describing a set of biological measurements.

4. Distinguish between normal frequency distribution and skewed distribution

5. Define the mean, mode, median and standard deviation and standard error and compute each of them from grouped and ungrouped data.

6. Use the standard error to compute 95% confidence limit for a mean or a proportion.

7. Distinguish between the standard deviation and standard error and give examples of the use of each 8.Select and compute necessary calculations to explore the statistical significance of a comparative qualitative and quantitative set of data.9.Interpret statements of statistical significance with regard to comparisons of means and frequencies and explain what is meant by statements such as “P<0.05). Explain the main pathways of metabolism of major diet components. Define the requirements of major human nutrients.

8. Explain the nutrient requirements of special groups (e.g., pregnant woman)

9. Explain the interaction of infection and nutritional status of an individual

10. List the main approaches to assess nutritional status of population

11. List and define major nutritional diseases.
