A master’s thesis at the University of Maisan is discusses (The Role of Raising Awareness of Collocation in Improving Iraqi EFL Learners’ Reading Comprehension at the University Level).

On Tuesday 29/12/2020, at the University of Misan / College of Education / Department of English Language, discussed a master’s thesis tagged (The Role of Raising Awareness of Collocation in Improving Iraqi EFL Learners’ Reading Comprehension at the University Level).

That was submitted by M.A. student (Muhammad Ahmad Karim) under the supervision of Prof. Fatima Rahim Abdul Hussein. The discussion committee consisted of Prof. Abdul-Karim Lazim Beheirr (University of Maisan / College of Basic Education) as a chair of committee and Asst. Prof. Dr. Najem Abdullah Burhan (University of Maisan / College of Education) as a member and Asst. Prof. Dr. Bushra Saadoun Muhammad (University of Baghdad / College of Education Ibn Rushd) as a member and Prof. Dr. Fatima Rahim Abdul Hussein (University of Maisan / College of Basic Education) as a member and supervisor.

This study deals with Collocation as a linguistic phenomenon with a psychological reality, which is established through computer codes, and constitutes an essential part in the mental organization of the lexicon of native speakers of a particular language and that the lack of knowledge of Collocation can cast a shadow on the linguistic competence of foreign language learners. The thesis consisted of four chapters. The first chapter deals with the problem of the study, its assumptions, objectives, procedures, limitations and importance. As for the second chapter, it included the theoretical framework of the study as it dealt with the concept of reading comprehension from a linguistic-psychological aspect and the factors that affect it and its levels, as well as the concept of linguistic awareness and its relationship to learning English as a foreign language,  and Collocation with the investigation of the history of its study and the definition of its semantic concept, its classifications and representations in computer records and its relationship to reading comprehension, as well as some studies related to the research topic. While the third chapter is devoted to the practical part of the research and the results of the study, as it provides details about the experimental design of the study, sample, and study tests, in addition to the procedures and activities used in developing awareness of Collocation in reading comprehension lessons and statistical tests used in the study. And the statistical results of the study proved that developing awareness of Collocation has a positive statistically significant effect in increasing knowledge of Collocation and developing reading comprehension of university students. As for the fourth chapter, it dealt with conclusions and recommendations and some suggestions for further future research.
