College of Medicine at the University of Misan holds a scientific symposium on the causes and treatment of halitosis.

The college of Medicine at the University of Misan organized a scientific symposium on the causes and treatment of halitosis, with the participation of researchers and specialists.

The symposium included a lecture given by Dr. Sami Khalaf Jabbar, which showed that bad breath affects about 50% of the world population and the most important causes are volatile sulfur compounds produced in the mouth by 90%, and these volatile compounds are closely related to the presence of types of aerobic gram negative bacteria. The posterior surface of the tongue and the connective tissue of the teeth are the most important oral sites for the production of bad breath.

The symposium dealt with the treatment of this smell in various ways, including mechanical methods using a toothbrush to clean the surfaces of the teeth and tongue as well as the use of medical threads, while chemical methods are including the use of chemical solutions such as oxygen mouthwash, the other way is by using zinc, which converts volatile sulfur compounds into compounds dissolved in the mouth.

The lecturer was recommended the need to take good care of dental hygiene and regular follow up of the case with specialist, but when the cause is not oral in origin the case must be followed by other specialties such as ENT specialist or physician.

At the end of the seminar, participants were given samples of mouthwashes and toothpastes used to treat halitosis. This seminar is part of the activities of the Division of Continuing Education in the College planned for the academic year
