A master’s thesis at the College of Science/ University of Misan examines acute thalassemia in Maysan Province.

A master’s thesis submitted by the student (Zahra Qassem Moussa) was discussed in the College of Science/Department of Biology under the title: – Genetic polymorphism in acute thalassemia patients in Maysan. The study aimed to shed the light on some of the genes associated with beta-thalassemia major, (HBB, BCL11A) and the relationship of these genes with the phenotype of the disease.

The results of the study showed the presence of a number of genetic mutations as well as a difference in the sequence of amino acids and thus a difference in the protein produced. The diagnosis of people with thalassemia was genetically reached by designing one of the genetic primers that can be used in diagnosing the disease with high accuracy and at the lowest cost. The project was supervised by Dr. Maitham Kadhim. Drag/ Head of the Department of Biology. On this occasion, the Dean of the College, Dr. Sabeh Jassim Kateaa met the members of the Discussion Committee in his office to appreciate their efforts with a letter of thanks and appreciation.

The discussion committee consisted of:

  1. Prof. Dr. Adnan Issa Al-Badran, College of Science, University of Basra, Chairman.
  2. Prof. Dr. Salah Hashem Al-Zuhairi, Dean of the College of Pharmacy, University of Misan, member.
  3. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Salah Hassan Farag, College of Science, University of Misan, Member.
  4. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Maytham Kadhimm Drag, College of Science, University of Misan, member and supervisor.
