Under the sponsorship of the Head of the Engineering Faculty, Professor Dr. Abbas Oda Dawood, and following the directives of the University Presidency and the Ministry of Interior/Civil Defense Directorate, workshops and seminars were held to emphasize the importance of occupational safety and risk prevention in state departments.
The Occupational Safety Unit, in collaboration with the Continuing Education Unit of the Faculty of Engineering and the Directorate of Civil Defense in Maysan, organized a workshop entitled “Civil Defense Activities and the Use of Firefighting Equipment in State Institutions”. The workshop was attended by Assistant Lecturer Mr. Humam Hussein Mugtath, Colonel Mr. Imad Amir Ali, Trainer Mr. Abdul Kadhim Jaseb, and Commissioner Mr. Rab’e Najem Abdullah.
The workshop provided a detailed explanation of different types of fires, various types of fire extinguishers, and how to use them depending on the situation. It also covered procedures for dealing with fires, evacuation processes, and the role of self-protection teams established within the faculty, as well as the necessity of providing fire extinguishers in the faculty and laboratories.
A practical demonstration was conducted, linking occupational safety requirements to the faculty’s evacuation methods during a fire. Emphasis was placed on the significance of training programs and field exercises for professors, employees, and students to improve and develop their capacities and skills in dealing with various risks.
The workshop concluded with a series of recommendations, which included conducting practical firefighting and training exercises for teachers, staff, and students at the faculty, along with documentation of these activities, such as the training date, trainer’s name, and signatures of both the trainer and trainees. Another recommendation was to promote student activities through the creation of warning posters about potential dangers and how to deal with fires when working in the faculty and laboratories.
The workshop was attended by the Head of the faculty and a group of professors and staff.
