The College of Engineering at the University of Misan Holds an Applied Scientific Symposium Titled:“Water Scarcity in Misan Governorate: Reality and Aspirations”

Under the patronage of Dr. Adil Manea Dakhil, and under the supervision of the Dean of the College of Engineering, Professor Dr. Abbas Odah Dawood, the Department of Civil Engineering at the College of Engineering, University of Misan, organized an applied scientific symposium titled “Water Scarcity in Misan Governorate: Reality and Aspirations.”

The symposium aimed to shed light on the water scarcity crisis in the governorate and its various dimensions, in addition to discussing possible solutions and identifying future aspirations for securing sustainable water sources. The event was attended by a group of specialized professors, students, and those interested in environmental and water-related issues.

Key Points of the Symposium:

  1. Reality of Water in Misan Governorate:
Presented by Chief Engineer Ali Faleh Abdullah, this session focused on the current state of water in Misan, addressing the causes of water scarcity, including climate change, water policies of neighboring countries, and the increased demand for water due to population growth and agricultural activities. It also discussed statistics on river and stream water levels and the impact on agriculture and drinking water availability.
  2. Utilization of Groundwater:
Presented by Professor Dr. Raed Saei Jasem, this session emphasized the importance of utilizing groundwater in Misan as an alternative solution to mitigate water scarcity. The presentation covered methods for extracting groundwater, ensuring its sustainability, and protecting the aquifer from depletion and pollution.
  3. Water Management Solutions:
Presented by Assistant Professor Dr. Moammar Hazem Ali, this session discussed practical proposals for improving water management, such as modern irrigation systems to reduce water wastage and methods for water recycling for agricultural and industrial use. The need for long-term plans to address water scarcity through climate change-compatible policies was also highlighted.

Recommendations:

At the conclusion of the symposium, the participants agreed on several recommendations aimed at finding practical and sustainable solutions to the water scarcity crisis in Misan Governorate, including:

  1. Strengthening cooperation between governmental and academic entities to develop effective water policies.
  2. Developing projects to provide and sustainably utilize groundwater resources.
  3. Raising awareness among the population about the importance of water conservation and using modern agricultural technologies.

The symposium ended with appreciation for the attendees and participants, emphasizing the need for continued collaboration between universities and relevant authorities to develop scientific and practical solutions to address the water scarcity crisis and ensure safe water sources for future generations.
