Under the auspices of the President of the University of Maysan, Professor Adel Man’e Dakhil, and the supervision of the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Professor Abbas Oda Dawood, and in line with ministerial and university directives to raise awareness about the crime of cyber extortion, the Student Activities Unit of the Faculty, in collaboration with the University’s Student Activities Department, organized an educational awareness campaign on the risks of electronic blackmailing. The campaign was supervised by Assistant Lecturer Mu’ayed Kareem Hassan and coordinated with the faculty’s students.
The event took place on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, at 11 a.m. in the Deanship building of the Faculty of Engineering. It featured the distribution of comprehensive awareness brochures that provided accurate information about the phenomenon of cyber extortion. Additionally, awareness-raising vests were placed throughout the faculty’s various facilities.
The campaign addressed several key topics, including the definition of electronic extortion, its types, causes, and effects. It also covered the legal penalties for this crime under Iraq’s Penal Code No. 111 of 1969, as amended. Furthermore, the campaign explained the legal procedures an individual could follow if they became a victim of such crimes and how they should report them to the relevant authorities.
The campaign received a positive response from students, staff, and faculty members, who engaged with the event by asking questions. Legal and social solutions to combat this growing issue were also discussed.
