Assistant Lecturer Ali Jabr Mushakil, a lecturer in the Department of Electrical Engineering – Faculty of Engineering / University of Maysan, published a scientific research entitled: “The MATLAB Circuit for Charging the Electric Car Battery from the Electrical Network and Discharging it into the Electrical Network (From Grid to Vehicle – G2V and From Vehicle to Grid – V2G)”
This work was completed in collaboration with professor B.H. Сидоров from Russia, and published in the peer-reviewed journal Интеллектуальная электротехника, which specializes in engineering and technology fields. The journal is among the accredited scientific journals listed by the Supreme Committee for Academic Accreditation of the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia (VAK).
The study explored the bidirectional exchange of energy between the electrical grid and the electric vehicle battery, known as G2V (Grid to Vehicle) and V2G (Vehicle to Grid). It confirmed the potential of electric car batteries to:
– Contribute to partially covering electrical load demands.
– Serve as backup sources of power.
– Provide solutions for improving electricity quality.
The research presented a two-stage approach to power conversion, integrating:
– A Three-Phase Active Rectifier for converting AC voltage into adjustable DC voltage.
– A Bidirectional Buck-Boost Converter to regulate battery current during both charging and discharging phases.
The proposed system was modeled and tested using MATLAB/Simulink, with results demonstrating the high efficiency of employing a 10 kW charger equipped with a control system capable of secure bidirectional power transfer (G2V–V2G) while maintaining power quality.
The study underscored the importance of international cooperation to enhance the integration of electric vehicle charging systems, highlighting the strategic role of electric cars in supporting the electricity grid and advancing the global electric transportation sector.
