In line with the directives of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research aimed at providing a healthy and safe university environment, the Faculty of Engineering – University of Maysan, under the direct supervision of its Deanship, launched a comprehensive awareness and organizational campaign to reduce smoking on campus.
The campaign was implemented through the efforts of Assistant Lecturer Moayed Karim Hassan, a lecturer in the Department of Petroleum Engineering, and followed up by the Anti-Smoking Committee at the faculty.
This initiative seeks to promote a culture of health awareness and social responsibility among students and staff, emphasizing the health and legal risks of smoking while encouraging positive behaviors that maintain public health and foster a safe, pollution-free learning environment.
The campaign’s field activities included the distribution of educational brochures highlighting the dangers of smoking and its harmful effects on the heart, lungs, and nervous system. Special attention was given to the risks of passive smoking affecting non-smokers. Additionally, posters and awareness banners bearing the unified slogan:
“Faculty of Engineering – Smoke-Free Zone”
were displayed throughout corridors, classrooms, and faculty buildings to reinforce the message of adopting healthy behaviors on campus.
The Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Professor Abbas Oda Dawood, affirmed that this initiative comes as part of a series of purposeful programs implemented by the faculty to enhance health awareness among students and employees. He praised the efforts of the Anti-Smoking Committee and the Government Information and Communication Division for their role in organizing and executing the campaign’s activities.
He also urged everyone to comply with university regulations and avoid behaviors that negatively affect public health and the academic environment.
The campaign witnessed notable interaction from students who expressed enthusiasm for the initiative and their support for creating a clean, healthy campus that reflects the civilized image of engineering students. Many also expressed readiness to participate in future awareness efforts aimed at promoting health education within and beyond the university.
This campaign reflects the Faculty of Engineering’s ongoing commitment to fostering social responsibility, promoting sound university life, and supporting the University of Maysan’s vision of establishing its educational institutions as exemplary models of integrated academic and health environments.
