Master’s Thesis at the Faculty of Engineering Discusses the Effects of Fires and High Temperatures on Concrete

A master’s thesis by researcher Nour Kazem Hammoud from the Department of Civil Engineering was discussed at the Faculty of Engineering – University of Maysan, entitled: “Behavior of a Lightweight Reinforced Concrete Slab under the Influence of Fire”

The public defense was conducted in the presence of a specialized scientific committee composed of:

• Professor Abbas Odeh Daoud – Chairman
• Professor Rafid Saeed Attia – Member
• Assistant Lecturer Professor Murtada Abbas Abdel Ali – Member
• Professor Samer Muhammad Jasb – Member and Supervisor

The thesis presented a detailed experimental study on the effects of fire and elevated temperatures on the properties of concrete, with the objective of enhancing the performance of concrete slabs and reducing the likelihood of structural failure under thermal loading conditions.

The study results highlighted the importance of adopting international standard specifications, including ISO 834 and ASTM E119, rather than relying on direct methods in evaluating the mechanical properties of concrete, due to their effectiveness in improving concrete performance under fire exposure.

The findings also demonstrated that the proposed strategy contributes to minimizing the probability of failure in lightweight concrete slabs, particularly when partial or complete replacement of concrete components is implemented under high-temperature conditions.

Furthermore, the study adopted multiple experimental methodologies based on different international standards, with comparative analyses conducted between normal-weight and lightweight concrete to determine the most suitable specifications for investigating concrete behavior under severe thermal conditions.

The results confirmed that the application of multiple techniques enhances concrete properties and reduces structural deformations caused by thermal loads.

At the conclusion of the discussion, the committee commended the researcher’s scientific efforts and wished her continued success in her academic and professional career.
