A Scientific Workshop at the Faculty of Engineering Highlights Forensic Engineering and Its Role in Achieving Justice

Under the patronage of the President of Maysan University, Professor Adel Manea Dakhil, and under the supervision of the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Professor Abbas Oda Dawood, the Continuing Education Unit at the Faculty of Engineering – Maysan University, in cooperation with the Department of Civil Engineering, organized an in-person scientific workshop entitled “Overview in Forensic Engineering”, held on Sunday, April 5, 2026, at 12:00 PM, with the attendance of a number of faculty members and those interested in engineering affairs.

The workshop was delivered by Assistant Lecturer Khitam Salem Hussein, a lecturer in the Department of Civil Engineering, and aimed to provide a comprehensive analytical perspective on the concept of forensic engineering, its methodologies, and its most important scientific references, in addition to highlighting its vital role in supporting judicial processes.

The workshop addressed several key topics, including an introduction to the role of the structural forensic engineer and the fundamental differences between this specialization and traditional structural engineering. It also reviewed the academic pathways of this field, the approved reference frameworks such as engineering codes and scientific literature, and the essential tests required for professional practice. The importance of the forensic engineer’s role in analyzing complex engineering cases and translating them into clear technical interpretations that assist judges and legal professionals in making accurate and fair decisions was also emphasized.

The workshop also featured a scientific contribution by Assistant Lecturer Professor Mortada Abbas Abdel Ali, who presented an applied intervention on the concept of progressive collapse, explaining methods for its analysis using engineering software such as ETABS and Excel. This contribution added significant practical value and enriched discussions on structural failure mechanisms encountered in forensic investigations.

At the conclusion of the workshop, it was emphasized that forensic engineering has become an essential necessity rather than a theoretical luxury, particularly in light of increasing natural disasters and the impacts of conflicts, which call for strengthening and advancing this specialization to serve society and promote justice.
